Who needs enemies when you have family. By Tim Brian Tufuga
Ok, Ive just argued and disowned family members which to me means that as a Samoan who doesnt like many Samoans and even family members, Im fine with it.
For the record. Samoans can detest each other just as passionately as a Redneck detesting coloured people. The Prime Minister is a prime example of how Samoans can dispense with polite etiquette and will become low life scums.
I have family connections on my father side and on my mothers father side who are close and are not considered as overt RIVALS.
As for my mother's mother side of the family, my mother encouraged them to migrate to Brisbane in the mid 1980s and the 1990s. It is with deep regret that these people have become naturalised as Australians and some arent and they have become permanent residents and have had their children brought up in Australia.
Some of these Samoan Children, to my cousins, I have refereed some of these kids Rugby League, and Rugby Union, games. Some of them were rude and obstinate on the football field. Overall, I found them to be reasonable kids. But, unlike these children in my time as a Rugby Player I was obedient and compliant and played without dissenting. I found that this generation of entitlement, the children have now grown up, and even they have children themselves, and their attitudes is sheer arrogance and again they have an overwhelming aura of entitlement.
I still find these family members to be very arrogant and entitled. I have vowed to disown them as family.
One thing I can do which is like saying you can choose your friends but you cant choose your family, that is where you are wrong.
WE CAN DISOWN ANYONE.
I am a Samoan, but, like all the different religious groups amongst the Samoans, not all Samoans think alike nor do they bow down to any particular Matai. And, just like the Samoan Head of State and even the Samoan Prime Minister, no one rules anyone.
You can pick and choose whom you wish to follow, so too is the situation of whom I choose to be part of my family.
These Samoans are better off serving a Tongan King since they are like headless chickens doing as they please because like the Children I referee on the Football Field, these kids think that they are entitled to rule the game they are playing in without a Referee to officiate them.
Like the Samoan protester whom had protested against the Samoan Prime Minister, he was an Indian Giver, afterall, he protested because he could do the job better himself!!!
The protester knew all about Samoa's economic situation and could offer a better economic strategy to combat poverty of a third world country so that it could become a rich and flourishing developed nation like Australia or New Zealand. He knew all about the solution to public works, road infrastructures, housing and development, taxation laws, immigration policies, fiscal management, tourism and trade and he knew the solution for the Samoan balance of payments to bring back the National debt to surplus and he knew all about National Security matters. That is why he threw the pigs head to the Prime Minister, because he knew all the answers to Samoa's woes.
Like these people, my family are great at criticising and putting people down...WHY???
Because, they are experts on Life and the challenges therein, they are experts on academic discourse, such as National Security matters, they are experts on Rugby League rulings, because they are all qualified Referees. Because they are experts on Rugby Union Rules, again, they are all qualified Referees. They are experts on Politics, because, they’ve all acquired the appropriate degrees, and, in sporting matters, it is because they are all international representatives in multisporting disciplines. They are experts on health and fitness because they have done triathlons and marathons, and, know what it is like, because they've all been there and have done it from their expansive life's experiences. And, wait for it, it is their vast experiences contrived from the University of hard knocks.
It is for the amalgam of reasons some of them aforementioned, I have found my extended families to be irritatingly bland and very repulsive.
They will only come around when there is a death in the family.
I will regret the day my mother welcomed her siblings to Brisbane until I die, for they arrived only to bury her and then to take over.
This was my extended family towards my late mother and my Grandma and no doubt towards my sister and I
Antony to Caesar:
"I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."
My mother's extended family arrived in Brisbane to bury my mother and Grandmother not to praise them.
